Calling Shots: 6 Things Bartenders Want to Tell Customers

Bartenders work hard to create delicious cocktails and provide excellent service to their customers. They make the most money by trying to serve everyone, and even if you have to wait, chances are that they’re doing their best. On rough nights though, there are a few things that they really wish they could tell their customers.

Be Patient

It’s important to be patient when the bar is crowded, and there are a lot of orders to fill. It’s in their best interest to serve you as quickly as possible too, so understand that they’re trying. Yelling or snapping your fingers won’t make the bartender serve you faster.

Know What You Want

Knowing what you want to drink before approaching the bar can make the process faster and more efficient. If you’re unsure, check the menu first and ask the bartender for recommendations.

Be Polite

Being rude or disrespectful to the bartender is unacceptable. Bartenders are there to provide an enjoyable experience, so treat them with respect. If you don’t, you risk poorer service or – if rude enough – an invitation to leave.

Tipping Matters

Tipping is a vital part of bartending, but some people still don’t realize that bartenders live off of tips. Being generous with your gratuity is appreciated, will be remembered, and should make you feel good too.

Don’t Get Hammered

Drinking responsibly is essential for a safe and enjoyable night out. Knowing your limits and pacing yourself can prevent unwanted behavior and poor decision making like breaking any of the other things listed here.

Say Thanks

Lastly, a simple “thank you” can go a long way. Bartenders work hard, and showing appreciation for their dedication and service is always appreciated. Remember that kindness and respect can make all the difference in the hospitality industry, and “Thank You” lets bartenders know that you got what you needed.
