Every state in the United States has its own set of laws, some of which are quite bizarre. Here are nine of the strangest state laws in the country.

  1. Alabama: It is illegal to wear a fake mustache in a church that causes laughter. Alabama’s anti-mask law prohibits wearing a mask or other disguise to conceal one’s identity in public, but it has a specific exemption for religious purposes.
  1. Alaska: It is illegal to wake up a sleeping bear for the purpose of taking a photograph. This law is in place to protect both humans and bears, as waking a bear from hibernation can be dangerous for both parties.
  1. Arizona: It is illegal for donkeys to sleep in bathtubs. This strange law dates back to 1924 when a local dam broke, and a donkey was found sheltering in a bathtub in order to avoid the floodwaters.
  1. Connecticut: Pickles must bounce to officially be considered pickles. According to state law, pickles must bounce when dropped from a height of one foot to be considered a pickle.
  2. Georgia: It is illegal to tie a giraffe to a telephone pole or street lamp. This law was enacted to prevent the circus from using telephone poles and street lamps to anchor their giraffes during a parade.
  3. Illinois: It is illegal to fall asleep in a cheese shop. This law was enacted to prevent shopkeepers from falling asleep on the job and failing to watch over their merchandise.
  4. Massachusetts: It is illegal to have a duel. The penalty for violating this law is up to seven years in prison, which is a harsher punishment than the penalty for attempted murder.
  5. New Jersey: It is illegal to frown at a police officer. This law is still on the books, although it is rarely enforced. It is believed to have been enacted in the early 20th century as a way to show respect for law enforcement.
  6. Tennessee: It is illegal to share your Netflix password. This law was enacted in 2011, and it makes it illegal to share login information for subscription-based streaming services like Netflix.
