Gone Dark: 10 TV Channels That Are No More

Over the past few decades, the television industry has undergone significant changes, with new channels emerging, and some old channels disappearing. While some channels may be missed by viewers, the rise of streaming services has helped to offset the loss of some of these channels. 

G4

G4 was a channel that focused on video games, technology, and geek culture. It was launched in 2002 and featured shows such as Attack of the Show! and X-Play. However, in 2014, the channel was shut down, and its content was absorbed into other networks.

TechTV

TechTV was a channel that focused on technology news and reviews. It was launched in 1998 and merged with G4 in 2004. However, the merged channel, G4TechTV, struggled to find an audience and was eventually shut down in 2005.

VH1 Classic

VH1 Classic was a channel that focused on classic music videos and concerts. It was launched in 1998 but was rebranded as MTV Classic in 2016. The channel still exists, but it no longer features classic music videos and concerts exclusively.

The WB

The WB was a channel that featured a mix of programming aimed at younger audiences, including popular shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dawson’s Creek, and Gilmore Girls. The channel merged with UPN in 2006 to become The CW.

UPN

UPN was a channel that featured a mix of programming aimed at African American and younger audiences, including popular shows like Moesha, Star Trek: Voyager, and Veronica Mars. The channel merged with The WB in 2006 to become The CW.

Court TV

Court TV was a channel that featured live coverage of trials and legal news. It was launched in 1991 but was rebranded as TruTV in 2008. The channel still exists but no longer focuses exclusively on legal news and trials.

Trio

Trio was a channel that focused on pop culture, with shows like Brilliant But Cancelled, which showcased short-lived television shows, and The N-Word, a documentary about the use of the N-word in popular culture. The channel was shut down in 2005, and its content was absorbed into other networks.

Discovery Health

Discovery Health was a channel that focused on health and wellness programming. It was launched in 1998 but was rebranded as OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network in 2011.

SoapNet – SoapNet was a channel that featured reruns of popular soap operas, as well as original programming, such as Soapography, which profiled soap opera stars. The channel was shut down in 2013, and its content was absorbed into Disney Junior.

The Travel Channel

The original Travel Channel was launched in 1987 and featured programming related to travel and adventure. In 2007, the channel was rebranded as Trvl and focused more on paranormal and supernatural programming. In 2009, the channel was rebranded again as The Travel Channel, and it now features a mix of travel-related programming and paranormal programming.
