What Boomers May Not Know about Gen Z

The generation born between the mid-1990s and early 2010s, commonly referred to as Generation Z, is the most diverse and globally connected generation in history. They’re in the workplace and impacting the market. Growing up in the digital age has shaped the way they view the world, communicate, and consume media. This has created a significant gap in understanding between them and the Baby Boomer generation (born between 1946-1964) who grew up in a vastly different cultural and social environment, so we’ve compiled some things that Boomers might not understand about Gen Z.

Social media is integral to their lives

For Gen Z, social media is not just a form of entertainment or communication, it is an integral part of their lives. From TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat to Twitter and YouTube, social media platforms are where Gen Z connects, consumes media, and builds their personal brands. Many Gen Zers have become social media influencers, using these platforms to monetize their content and build businesses.

Mental health is a priority

Unlike previous generations, Gen Z is more open about discussing and prioritizing mental health. They have grown up in an era where mental health is increasingly being recognized as important, and have access to more resources than ever before. Many Gen Zers actively seek out therapy, self-care practices, and prioritize mental health in their daily lives.

Gender identity is more fluid

Gen Z is more likely to identify as non-binary or transgender, challenging the traditional binary gender roles of male and female. They are also more accepting of those who do not identify with the gender they were assigned at birth. This is in stark contrast to the attitudes of the Baby Boomer generation, which tended to be more rigid in their views of gender and sexuality.

Political correctness is important

Gen Z is the most diverse generation in history, and they value political correctness and inclusivity. They are more likely to speak out against racism, sexism, homophobia, and other forms of discrimination. They have also been at the forefront of movements such as #MeToo, Black Lives Matter, and LGBTQ+ rights.

Climate change is a top concern

Gen Z is deeply concerned about climate change and the impact it will have on their future. They are more likely to support policies that address climate change and are vocal in their criticism of those who deny its existence. They are also more likely to adopt eco-friendly practices and seek out sustainable products.

Entrepreneurship is attractive

Gen Z is more likely to start their own businesses or pursue careers in entrepreneurship. They are attracted to the idea of being their own boss, creating something from scratch, and having a flexible work-life balance. This is a departure from the Baby Boomer generation, which tended to value stability and job security above all else.

The differences between Gen Z and Baby Boomers are significant, but understanding those differences helps bridge the gap. Gen Z’s unique experiences and perspectives offer a fresh outlook on the world from technology to the workspace. Gen Z can learn from the wisdom and experiences of the Baby Boomer generation to adopt what’s worked and find areas to improve, and while they may operate and think quite differently, maybe this understanding can help ease those differences in opinion.
